@NotFineinSchool families (80k amassed since 2018) tell us on repeat zero tolerance schools directly contribute to their child’s loss of learning, engagement, wellbeing, self-esteem, hope, joy, happiness, ability to leave the home. The school to CAMHS pipeline is one known well to too many parents and carers. Like watching a car crash in slow motion. The pernicious drip drip drip of unhappiness to chronic distress to self injury, disabling anxiety, suicidal ideation. Culture wars, division, segregation and isolation dominate tabloid discourse, with children left as the casualties, collateral damage in a world of populist short shrift disdain and deficit discriminatory narratives, which serve no one and remedy nothing. Families breakdown. Young carers are created. Medical needs rise. Learning support escalates. Bullying embeds. Violence can emerge. Employment is lost. Homes are sold. Despair and downward social mobility becomes the norm. PPP is jovially the culprit (Piss Poor Parenting the known go to acronym said with a smirk by some in some schools). Professionalism is trumped by ideology and managerialism. Policy, practice, culture which on the surface works leads to generational losses. Greater knowledge through lived experience why and how families become hard to reach is a moral imperative to listen to hear and pause to reflect before reacting to all working in the space. Talk to us. Our 80k families and partner organisations want to support the development of what happens next. We have the exits. The risks for children not in school and those missing education are substantial. Work with us. Increased surveillance and scrutiny of families persistently and severely absent isn’t going to cut it. Mothers & children bearing the brunt. In workforce & homes. Women becoming advocates and campaigners too often placed in the too complex a problem drawer. Yet we understand complexity and intersectionality. It’s our jam. My SAR request revealed quite a lot. Senior commissioner writing in an internal email. “I don’t think he needs an EHCP, let alone a personal Education Budget now he’s 16 and at the end of statutory schooling. We need a clear exit route.” Disgraceful and discriminatory! 🤬💔
