Isaac Newton, uno de los mayores genios de la historia, fue víctima de la burbuja de los Mares del Sur (South Sea Bubble) en 1720. La South Sea Company prometía grandes beneficios gracias al comercio con América del Sur, pero en realidad era más un esquema especulativo que un negocio sólido. Newton primero invirtió temprano, ganó dinero y salió con beneficios. Sin embargo, al ver cómo sus amigos se enriquecían aún más, volvió a entrar con una suma mucho mayor justo antes de que la burbuja estallara. Terminó perdiendo la mayor parte de su fortuna. Se cuenta que Newton comentó: "Puedo calcular el movimiento de los cuerpos celestes, pero no la locura de la gente." Tariffs Then and Now: Kindleberger’s Warning Amid Today’s Economic Slide In The World in Depression 1929–1939, Charles P. Kindleberger argued that tariffs in the 1930s were accelerants, not shields. The Smoot-Hawley Tariff of 1930 triggered retaliation, fractured global trade, and deepened the slump. Kindleberger saw this not as a one off mistake but as a symptom of leaderless globalization: no hegemon stepped in to keep markets open, provide liquidity, and absorb shocks. The result was a deflationary spiral where shrinking trade volumes and collapsing prices fed on each other. Fast forward to today, and the rhyme is clear. Tariffs are again promoted as protection for domestic workers and supply chains. But Kindleberger’s lesson holds because in a fragile economy, tariffs don’t stabilize, they multiply the stress. They appear inflationary at first, raising import prices, but when layered onto weak demand and heavy debt, they flip into deflationary contraction. Households pay more but buy less. Businesses see costs rise into slowing sales. Margins compress, defaults rise, and financial stress ripples outward. The backdrop makes this more dangerous than in the 1930s. Today’s economic indicators are flashing deterioration. Credit card, auto loan, and student loan delinquencies are climbing toward post 2008 highs. Commercial real estate, especially offices is unraveling as refinancing collides with higher rates and falling occupancy. Housing affordability has collapsed under 7% mortgage rates, with volumes sinking despite shortage narratives. Freight demand, a proxy for trade flow, is weak, while building permits point to slowing construction. Corporate defaults have breached 4% with spreads still deceptively tight, leaving banks and insurers exposed. These are not signs of resilience but fractures under pressure. On top of this sits a demographic headwind Kindleberger never faced in the 1930s: aging populations. Then, economies were young, with expanding labor forces and high birth rates. Today, the U.S., Europe, China, and Japan are all aging rapidly, with dependency ratios climbing. Older populations consume less, save more cautiously, and reduce long term demand growth. That structural drag compounds the deflationary risk of tariffs. When demographics already lean toward slower consumption, tariffs accelerate demand destruction instead of providing protection. Kindleberger emphasized that the 1930s lacked leadership, a stabilizer to keep trade and credit flowing. Today the Fed and Treasury attempt that role, but both are constrained. The Fed is stuck between controlling inflation and preventing credit accidents. Treasury is rolling short term debt to steady markets while the long end of the curve wobbles. Global capital flows are fragmenting, with BRICS building alternative systems. In this fractured landscape, tariffs risk accelerating not resilience but contraction, much like in the 1930s. The likely outcome is not lasting inflation from tariffs but deflation through demand destruction and debt stress. With households strained, businesses pressured, banks exposed, and demographics tilting consumption downward, tariffs become another accelerant to fragility. Kindleberger’s lesson is protectionism promises security but delivers collapse. Then, it helped trigger the Great Depression. Now, in a world of aging populations and unsustainable debt, it could deliver a deflationary spiral faster than policymakers realize.

Este es el indicador de expectativas de inflación que más manejan los bancos centrales, como vemos, los grandes operadores sí creen que los aranceles subirán la inflación, como no me cabe ninguna duda de hecho va a suceder.
