Last year, we inaugurated our R&D facility at @iiscbangalore and named it Shonku Labs, a hat tip to Satyajit Ray’s eccentric scientist who dared to imagine wild scientific breakthroughs. As of this week Shonku Labs is now DSIR-certified (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) by the Government of India. Shonku Labs is our frontier R&D lab studying earth sciences with the long-term aim of breakthroughs in Planetary Intelligence. Thanks to @IndiaDST @DrJitendraSingh @waghmare16 for this recognition. This will greatly accelerate collaboration with other national labs and universities to do joint research on India’s soils, rivers, minerals, and climate adaptation. There’s a bunch of other taxation and policy benefits as well. If you’re a deeptech startup — I highly recommend getting this. My DMs are open in case you need advice!
Asimov’s Foundation series was a major influence on me. That and the fall of Rome, from which Foundation takes inspiration, is what convinced me that we need to extend consciousness beyond Earth to avoid a potentially infinite dark age.
The knowledge that makes AI useful is diffused. It lives with scientists, engineers, clinicians, firms. For AI to benefit from distributed knowledge, it must itself be distributed. Agree with Jensen that this is a future worth building.
For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @nvidia signed on why open models matter. AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country. Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.
Universities are not teaching this. The playbooks are not yet written. The alpha belongs entirely to those who stop waiting for curriculums and start building the bridge today.
