Modern man is spiritually retarded because he thinks symbolism is silly. He is a man of science. He knows that which cannot be precisely measured is not a matter of fact and thus believing it is foolish. He fills his head with knowledge while remaining blind to the that which is closest to him: most of all, his own heart. He doesn't care for fripperies like architectural ornamentation or larger than life heroes or old words or dancing or fantastical monsters; or at least, he thinks those things don't matter. Whenever he stops moving life seems flat and grey, so he avoids quiet and stillness. He never sits to watch the sunset. If he did, he would see only a natural process. He can describe the spectrum of colours and how it arises, but he cannot tell you its purpose and insists such questions are nonsensical. He is a man of industry. He dedicates himself to efficiency in the pursuit of money, status and power but doesn't know what those things are *for* - because he doesn't know what *anything* is for. In business, he plays to win. He makes his home in the trenches and doesn't notice the same ground has been won a thousand times before. Neither does he notice that the mud that covers him no longer washes off. His wife and children feel unimportant. Entertainment fails to inspire him. Drugs prove a poor substitute for the spark he had when young. His car, his yacht, his plane, is never luxurious enough. No matter how Jack plays, he is still a dull boy. His power is no larger than his own hands, his own tongue, because he refuses to let himself be used by anything above himself. He has lost the sense of the transcendent, so nothing he does is bigger than his own vision. And that vision is small indeed, because he has stepped down from the shoulders of his ancestral giants. He is too busy for philosophy or spirituality. He is important. People say so. He has many meetings, but feels disconnected. His words are heard but never treasured. He has had sex with many women, real and imagined, but he feels lonely. He sows seed but his seed never grows. He spends and invests but he has no sense of community. He knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. He loves fine dining but despite his full stomach, he feels empty. He eats but does not digest. When he is tested, the reason is clear: he has no guts.

The main problem with modern therapy is that it talks about trauma and happiness rather than virtue and vice. Many people need to be told they are bad people. And exactly how.
