Itheum launched “Liveliness” nearly two years ago - a smart contract-powered reputation system designed to signal trust in our own data marketplaces. We admit it; we were too early. Today, AI is accelerating the creation of content and data at an exponential rate. As a result, we can no longer simply trust what we see - or who we interact with online. As @a16zcrypto noted: "To safely delegate our economy to machines, trust can no longer rely on manual inspection — trust must be hardcoded into the architecture itself." But before we can build trust into the architecture of machines, we need to answer a more fundamental question: What is objective trust?

This dialogue echoes our original Itheum whitepaper from 2021. It warned about the dangers of “data brokers” and how user data is harvested and used against you. Itheum has been building an alternative tech stack for apps that don’t harvest or exploit data. We didn’t choose this path because it was easy, profitable, or trendy - we chose it because protecting your data and privacy is a fundamental human need, and it was the hard thing to do.
