I pray that one day there will not be someone who pulls out a gun in these disorderly, xenophobic, and unlawful pushbacks. When arguments become heated and people on either side feel agitated, someone might end up doing something reckless in a moment of madness. Government needs to intervene now, rather than wishing they had acted after tragedy strikes. Nobody sane supports illegal immigration, but this is not the way to police it. It is barbaric and tarnishes South Africa’s image as these videos spread across the world. If the state fails to act decisively, these vigilante mobs will grow bolder, and South Africa risks sliding into lawlessness where violence replaces lawful governance. What starts in hospitals will soon spill into schools, workplaces, and neighbourhoods, further tearing communities apart.
