This is horrible to watch. There was a one year old thrown three seats away. A woman was seen crying because she still cannot hear properly. People were asleep at 6 in the morning on a holiday flight back from Phuket, and woke up on the floor of the aisle. Now the plane itself was never in danger. Not for one second. Every bit of this damage happened inside the cabin. First, I'll explain the science behind turbulence. Air behaves like a fluid up there, similar to water. It has density, it has layers, and those layers move at different speeds. A plane sits in it the same way a boat sits on the sea. When a wave passes, it rides the wave. At 35,000 feet the aircraft is flying near the jet stream, which is a river of very fast wind circling the planet from west to east. Airlines use it to save fuel and time. The wind inside it can be 200 kmph or more. So think about it like the edges of that river. On one side you have air moving very fast. Closer to the edge the air moves much slower. That difference in speed is called wind shear. Normally the atmosphere absorbs that difference smoothly. But if the gap in speed gets big enough, the air cannot hold the shape anymore and it tears. It breaks into rolling swirls, the same way water breaks into eddies behind a rock in a river. The plane flies into those swirls. One swirl pushes the wing up, the next one pulls it down. The air itself starts moving up and down and the aircraft follows it. Wings are designed to flex, they bend upward under load like a shock absorber, and they are certified to take around 150 percent of the loads they are ever expected to meet. So the plane remains fine during turbulence. It's a different story for the people inside the cabin. This flight lost about 300 feet in a matter of seconds. So, the floor of the cabin accelerates downward. If you are strapped to your seat, the belt pulls you down with the floor and you only feel a jolt. But if you are not strapped in, nothing pulls you anywhere. You simply stay where you were for a moment while the plane moves down around you. From inside, it looks like you flew upward. In the strongest turbulence the aircraft accelerates downward faster than gravity, so anything not bolted down floats for a moment. If you are not buckled up, you lift out of your seat. Then the plane comes back up and meets you and injures you. The ceiling, the armrest, the seat frame, the trolley. Passengers on this flight described people hitting the roof and falling back down more than once, bags coming out of the bins onto people's heads, and a baby thrown across three rows. The NTSB studied ten years of airline accidents and found turbulence involved in 38 percent of them. Passengers made up 21 percent of the seriously injured, and almost every one of those passengers had their belt off. Cabin crew made up the other 79 percent, purely because their job keeps them standing. Most of these injuries happen below 20,000 feet, near thunderstorms. The kind that catches everyone out is clear air turbulence. There is no cloud, no storm, just blue sky in every direction. Weather radar works by bouncing signals off water droplets, so it sees rain and storms. Dry swirling air has nothing to reflect. The radar shows a clean screen right up to the moment it hits. It is caused by that same wind shear near the jet stream, where big air masses moving at different speeds break the atmosphere into chaotic patterns. And it is getting worse. Severe clear air turbulence over the North Atlantic increased 55 percent between 1979 and 2020, moderate turbulence by 37 percent. A warming planet is speeding up the jet stream, and a faster jet stream means sharper wind shear at its edges. That is why the simple, old advice is the truest. Keep your belt fastened whenever you are seated, even when the sign is off. Loose is enough. You will sleep straight through the flight and you have removed nearly all of your personal risk. If you are flying with an infant, keep the child belted or in a proper child seat. For the bags, push your case flat to the back of the bin, wheels first, and put the heavy things at the bottom with soft bags on top. If your bin looks overpacked or the door needs force to shut, tell the crew and let them redistribute it instead of forcing it closed. Use the toilet early in the flight. Standing in a lavatory during a sudden drop is the worst place on the aircraft to be. Finish or hand back hot drinks the moment the crew mentions turbulence ahead. And when the crew tells you to sit, please sit immediately. :)
