#NEWS: As of 4:27 PM on May 8, 2026, MCPS says the current plan is to restore teacher access to myMCPS Classroom (Canvas) later Sunday into Monday so educators can review materials and prepare for instruction, while student access will continue to be evaluated throughout Monday to determine if it is safe to restore.
#NEWS: As of 7:45 AM on May 8, 2026, Canvas is beginning to return to service following a major, widespread outage and reported cybersecurity incident affecting institutions nationwide.
However, MCPS says myMCPS Classroom will remain unavailable “out of an abundance of caution” while designated technology and security staff continue working to confirm all services are safe before restoring access.
#NEWS: MCPS says myMCPS Classroom (Canvas) will remain unavailable “out of an abundance of caution” while designated technology and security staff continue working to assess the full impact and any potential vulnerabilities related to the platform.
Students and families are asked not to attempt logging in at this time.
#NEWS: Passengers at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (@BWI_Airport) are experiencing major security delays Saturday morning after multiple TSA checkpoints temporarily closed due to staffing shortages.
As of 8:35 a.m. on March 28, security checkpoints A and B remain closed, forcing travelers through the remaining checkpoint where significant delays and long lines have developed.
Airport officials are advising passengers to arrive up to four hours before their scheduled departure while the situation continues.

#NEWS: The Howard County Public School System (@HCPSS) announced that high school students will begin their day two minutes earlier starting May 4, shifting the start time from 7:50 a.m. to 7:48 a.m.
The adjusted schedule will remain in place for the remainder of the school year as the district works to recover instructional time lost after a two-hour delay on March 3 and a three-hour early dismissal on March 16 during severe weather events.
Officials also confirmed that June 8 will now be a full school day for all students.

#NEWS: Montgomery County Public Schools (@MCPS) has approved a new plan allowing virtual learning during extended weather-related closures starting in the 2026–27 school year.
Snow days will still be used first, with online instruction only after all built-in makeup days are used. The plan will now be sent to the state for final approval.

#NEWS: Maryland lawmakers are moving toward major restrictions on student phone use in public schools.
The House passed a bill Monday that would require all public school districts to limit access to cell phones, laptops, and other personal devices during the school day, while also blocking social media.
Districts would set their own policies, with exceptions allowed for learning, health needs, and emergencies. If finalized and signed into law, the changes would take effect by the 2027–28 school year.

#NEWS: Metro (@wmata) will pause Red Line service between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights from July 6 through September 7, 2026, for major construction work.
During the closure, trains will not stop at Bethesda, Medical Center, or Grosvenor-Strathmore, with free shuttle buses replacing service. Red Line trains will still run every six minutes on both sides of the shutdown.
The project includes upgrades at Bethesda for the future Purple Line connection, platform work, and track replacement along Rockville Pike.

#NEWS: The Maryland State Board of Education has approved MCPS’s waiver request, allowing the district to end the 2025–26 school year on Thursday, June 18, instead of the previously required Thursday, June 25.

#ATTENTION: A SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER THREAT IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE D.C, MARYLAND & VIRGINIA REGION TODAY
A potentially dangerous severe weather outbreak is expected today across the DMV as the Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a rare Moderate Risk (Level 4/5) for severe storms.
Thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening could produce widespread damaging winds, numerous downed trees, power outages, and tornadoes. A strong line of storms is currently expected to move through the region between roughly 2–7 PM, though timing may still shift.
Yesterday was the first Day 2 Moderate Risk issued for the DMV since June 2013 and the first 15% tornado probability since June 2012, highlighting how uncommon this setup is.
Stay weather aware today as conditions may change quickly.

#NEWS: The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has upgraded the entire DMV region to an Enhanced Risk (Level 3/5) for severe weather Monday, signaling growing confidence in a significant severe weather event.
A powerful cold front may trigger severe thunderstorms capable of widespread damaging winds, with scattered power outages and tree damage possible. An isolated tornado risk cannot be ruled out.
#dcwx#mdwx#vawx
#NEW: A Day 4 30% severe risk has just been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for parts of the DMV region, including southern Montgomery County.
A 30% area at this range is rare for our region and signals high early confidence in a potentially impactful severe weather setup.
The main threat is severe, damaging straight‑line winds, with the potential for widespread tree damage, power outages, and hazardous travel if storms organize into fast‑moving lines or clusters. Other hazards remain possible, but the wind threat is the clear focus at this stage.

Due to this evenings storms there are several reports of traffic signals out and wires down throughout the Germantown and Clarksburg area. Please drive with caution and watch for police direction.
#NEWS: Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, March 8, 2026, moving most of the United States one hour ahead.
Clocks “spring forward,” resulting in later sunsets and sunrises across most states except Hawaii and much of Arizona.
Key changes include:
- One hour of lost sleep, which may cause short-term fatigue and minor disruptions to circadian rhythms.
- More evening daylight, potentially benefiting outdoor activities and after-work commuting.
To adapt:
- Set clocks, devices, and alarms forward one hour before bed.
- Keep a consistent sleep schedule and aim for 7–9 hours of rest.

#NEWS: The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Montgomery County until 10:00 AM Thursday.
Visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less, which could create hazardous travel conditions for the Thursday morning commute.
If driving, slow down, use headlights, and allow extra distance between vehicles. #dcwx#mdwx#vawx
