With 1.5 billion active iPhones out there, Apple can change the LLM landscape overnight. A new report from AppleInsider claims Apple has been testing its "Apple GPT" internally. They don't seem to be interested in competing with ChatGPT. Instead, Apple wants to find a consumer angle for their AI. The report claims that Apple hopes to have a major AI launch in 2024. Can you imagine having one of these models powering Apple software across 1.5 billion iPhones? Even better, imagine Apple providing an API to developers so they can use an LLM to build iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS applications. Do you think a model released by Apple can take a significant share of the still-forming LLM market?

I fully agree that it’s very important to have honest, constructive debate about the work and about conclusions or inferences drawn. This is common in the academic environment, but it is generally much weaker in the corporate environment, and we need to change that. Clear documentation of one’s position. And welcoming of good faith criticism are essential for progress.
