Maybe I need to write a blog post called "On Call For Managers". If you're asking engineers to be on call for their code -- and you should -- you owe in return: - enough time to fix what's broken - hands to do the work - closely track how often they are interrupted/woken - ..etc

It is effectively free to write code, compared to the gargantuan resources it takes to run that code and tend to it over the years. @mipsytipsy

@JerkyTreats @mipsytipsy Fear (of deployments) is the mind killer. It will kill productivity when everyone starts to walk on eggshells. Continuous delivery, automated testing, monitoring, alerting, and rollback strategies work because they reduce fear and anxiety. They let you move faster without worry.

Have you ever had to have a spreadsheet to track how many people filled out the spreadsheet so that you can email them about the email to fill out your spreadsheet? Nobody went to college because they want to do that. The SaaS app will merrily cronjob it’s way through that.

@github debugging doesn't have to be that hard. we have MADE it hard by scattering all the relevant detail to the four winds. of course it's complicated if you're trying to hop from tool to tool to tool, just to recreate what happened from log spew and metrics and traces.

i think the way burnout happens for me is when there are long term systemic problems + they are perpetually pushed back in favor of more practical short term solutions until i am actually emotionally incapable of even entertaining the discussion of practical short term solutions

This is mostly true. The thing about programming is there's a very short amount of time between knowing how to do something, and it being done. And you do it once and it's over, and you move on to the next thing you don't know how to do.
