Twice, I went to attempts by a group of women to screen a documentary about women’s rights, Adult Human Female. The first time, it couldn’t go ahead because of a large group of protesters and the second time, it went ahead but only thanks to heavy security. Watching @4corners on pregnancy discrimination and the Sex Discrimination Commissioner is using gender neutral terms to describe “caregivers” and “people” rather than mothers. How can we fix issues like sex discrimination we can’t even adequately describe it? These “experts” who use gender neutral language are a big part of the problem.
Bridget Phillipson's assurance that 'refusing to accept a child's identity' will not be prosecutable under conversion practices legislation is contradicted by the bill itself, which says that 'psychological or emotional pressure' with the intention of changing 'transgender identity' could qualify as a criminal offence. How can Phillipson know how a court will interpret 'refusing to accept a child's identity' given the vague and open-ended definitions in the bill? An op-ed by a politician will be scant consolation when a parent is facing a criminal claim or a protection order that will destroy their relationship with their child. Good governments don't do this. Nor do ones that really care about what they say they care about. People who throw this word without being able to define it aren't serious about making anyone's life better, beyond a charmed circle round power, it's just gesture politics.
