There is nothing more barbarous, and thus more disgusting, than an oppressive system that perpetrates unspeakable violence and injustice, and yet insists that its victims be polite to it or apologise for speaking up.
The survivors of the injustice have the right to speak back, criticise, censure, and shame the system ALWAYS. And they should do so unapologetically and excoriatingly, and with righteous indignation. It’s the system that owes them apology albeit agonistically and painfully.
To expect the victims/survivors to be polite or apologetic is to attempt to silence resistance and to re-enact the original violence.
Oppressed peoples (in Ethiopia or beyond) owe no apologies for criticising and exposing the oppressive/genocidal system and “telling the truth like it is”. For as things stand now, the Ethiopian state stands indicted for genocide and several other dastardly crimes, historical and contemporary.
It’s our human(e) duty, as survivors and witnesses, to expose it, to shame it, and to mobilise people to resist it. It’s their job to respond, accept responsibility, atone for it, and apologise while there is time.
Yes, you owe us an apology and much much more! We owe you nothing, except criticism (which in itself is an act of loyalty).
Trying to bully Oromia and Oromos out of their natural, legal, legitimate rights to their cities is a tactic used thousands of times over the last several decades. And it didn’t work. The more the bullying, the stronger the response. The table will turn. And soon.

Neither ignorance nor sinister moral blindness is an excuse!
===================
Ethio-elite’s morally blind argument regarding Finfinnee: every body can claim Finfinnee as his own except the Oromo. When everyone says “Finfinnee is mine,” it’s okay. When an Oromo says it is mine, all hell breaks loose. Why? Because…well, there is no because (no reasoning), hatred is enough. Just pure hatred.
No, Ato @kebour_G Ghenna, the Oromo quest is not about “gaining”Finfinnee (as if it is something to be achieved); it is about recognition as an Oromo city purely because its geographic location makes it so.
Nor is it about “possession,” for the possessor is whoever is living there, possessing a plot to work or a flat he built or bought. No body, no Oromo, ever contested that.
Also, no body said, the city’s recognition as an Oromo city should make others less entitled to rights or legal protection in any sense whatsoever. The quest is merely for the city’s Oromo identity to be recognised. From your writing, it is obvious that you are deliberately making up claims that the Oromo never raised.
The fact that every resident “contributed” to the “development” of the city does not make it a non-Oromo city unless, of course, you are—rather conveniently —assuming that the land was a masterless property (terra nullius) at the time of the conquest, occupation, and dispossession that subsequently led to fashioning it as a garrison town. It was depopulated by a genocidal logic of settler colonialism, a protracted project of dispossession and displacement. I should not be the one to remind you of what your favourite court historians elaborately wrote about this.
The example of Bern is an example that actually supports the claim that the city should be under Oromia (just as Bern is a city recognised as, and governed by, the local laws of the Canton in which it is located). What makes it right when Switzerland does it and wrong when the same model is proposed for Ethiopia?
I know what causes this difference in judgement: moral blindness emanating from sedimented prejudice and long-held Oromophobia.
One can’t be anymore opportunistic(ally selfish) or cynical!
But neither selfishness nor cynicism, neither moral blindness nor crass Oromophobia, is an excuse. The truth is clear, and it shames your tactical obscurantism.
Want to talk about where to situate the Federal Government? Then…
========================
Does anyone want to have a discussion about how to decide on, or build, a federal city (be it as an autonomous federal district, or a designated seat of the federal government in one of the states, or several cities as hosts of each of the three organs of the federal government (ie, the Parliament, the Supreme Court, or the Executive))? That’s fine. We can have that discussion.
Do we want to do so at the expense of one of the states (whom we want to remain muted)? No, never.
Do we want to exact proportionate expense from all states? Yes, for sure.
Will Oromia and Oromos offer their share of contributions in the form of money, labour, resources, or a plot of land as part of the larger project of building a shared national asset? Absolutely! By all means. In fact, that will be the inaugural act of building a genuinely federal multinational state in the place of the genocidal empire it currently is.
Will Oromia allow Finfinnee to be the seat of the Federal government? It may, but only on condition that:
a) explicit recognition of its historical Oromo identity is legally posited;
b) acknowledgment of the injustice perpetrated since the moment of conquest and settlement is duly affirmed;
c) responsibility is admitted, atonement for the violence and destruction that attended dispossession and displacement is formally recognized, and a token reparation is duly paid; and
d) the Oromo nation accepts, in a referendum, the above terms as its gesture of forgiveness and reconciliation with the Ethiopian State henceforth.
This is what a duly constituted constitutional commission, or a legitimate amendment body, would have done, and may choose to do in the future.
It is important to note that this is not a negotiation over Oromia’s right to its city. It’s about a search for a suitable “capital city” for a democratically renegotiated and genuinely FEDERAL government.
Anything less is a joke. No, it will be a travesty of justice. And naturally, it is unacceptable.
