MAGAZINE ILLUSTRATION EXAMPLE: This is one of hundreds of illustrations I made in a previous section of my career as a busy magazine illustrator—mostly in the 1980s. Things tapered off into the 90s as I moved towards primarily doing animation and comics work, with a large dose of ad agency work as well. This art was probably early 90s, and for a magazine such as CANADIAN BUSINESS. I worked with an agent back then and had many different clients, so I don’t exactly recall what it was for. The images show the process: a line illustration on semi-transparent vellum, inked over a sketch. That was made into a film positive overlay. Underneath that I rendered the color art on illustration board using airbrush, cutting each shape with frisket (sticky transparent film used for masking shapes). The softer airbrush edges were made using handheld cutout shapes made from cardboard, using an X-Acto knife. Depending on the distance the cutout mask was held above the art surface, you could produce different degrees of edge softness as the spray diffused across the cutout’s edge. A very different process compared to Photoshop and layers. It was all physical manipulation, nothing digital, and you had to be exact. Mistakes were tough to fix, and a BIG problem, especially on deadline. That necessitated careful thought and pre planning!

My Red Wing leather work boots were completely demolished after four years of heavy landscaping. The left sole was flapping and the toe leather was gouged down to the lining. I threw them into the trash bin by my driveway on a Tuesday morning. My 76-year-old neighbor Arthur—a retired Marine who mows his lawn with military precision—walked over, reached into the bin, and pulled the boots out by the laces. He examined the torn hides with the cold disgust of an officer inspecting a neglected service rifle. "Who declared these dead?" "The sole separated," I said. "A modern man orders a replacement pair on Amazon in thirty seconds." Arthur spat on the gravel. "Get in the truck." He drove me four miles to a tiny, windowless red brick shop wedged behind an old grain silo. Inside smelled of beeswax, neatsfoot oil, and fifty years of pine sawdust. An eighty-two-year-old cobbler named Hank took my ruined boots. He ran his scarred thumb along the deepest slash across the leather vamp. "This didn't happen sitting on an office chair," Hank muttered, tapping the leather with a wooden mallet. "This leather remembers every rock you kicked. You don’t bury a good soldier while his bones are still intact." Hank restitched the Goodyear welt, cemented a heavy Vibram lug sole, and worked hot beeswax oil deep into the dried hides. When I picked them up on Friday, they didn’t look brand new. They looked invincible. I asked Hank what I owed him. "Forty-five dollars. And your word you wear 'em until your boy has to resole 'em." In Japan, we believe that an old tool cared for over decades develops an immortal soul called 'Tsukumogami.' In America, they don't bother with fancy words. They just have two stubborn old men who refuse to let honest leather die.
