According to Hakeem’s account, he left the apartment to buy something and returned to find Naza dead. He alleges that he was tied up, robbed of his jewellery, valuables and about $200,000, forced to turn off the CCTV, and that the attackers left with Naza’s body. There are still serious questions surrounding this account, and Hakeem remains in police custody. None of this absolves Hakeem of anything. I have questions about his account too. But Naza’s death cannot become an excuse to blame her for being greedy, for dating a Yoruba man, or for choosing to be with someone wealthy. And if you think only women can be victims of people like this, you’re wrong. A man can be a victim too. The people allegedly connected to Fola’s previous cases were men. So stop turning Naza’s death into a morality tale about what she should have done differently. The priority is finding the people the police are looking for and finding out what happened to Naza.
