A young person recently asked me what I look for in people I'm hiring and what skills and habits I think are most important to cultivate if you are to be successful in your career. Here's a brief summary: No matter where you work, develop: 1. Ownership – Don’t say “this isn’t my job.” Don’t think about “your task.” Get the whole thing done. 2. Emotional and mental fortitude – Don’t scare easily, don’t run away, learn to deal with being overwhelmed. 3. Perseverance – Don’t expect wins quickly. Keep at it. 4. Humility – Don’t claim, show. Earn respect with your actions; don’t demand it with your words. 5. Relationship orientation – Be amongst people, in the thick of the action, make friends, stick with people, be loyal, be helpful, be friendly… Learn to encourage and persist. Don’t follow scripts. It is off-putting to see people weaponize the mechanics of relationship building. Be genuine, be real. In the technology industry in particular: 1. Ask yourself if you love what you are doing and are willing to be consumed by the love of your art. If not, do something else. 2. Focus on first principles. Don’t be a framework monkey. 3. Read a lot. Write a lot. Explain a lot. This is how you learn. 4. Computation holds the secrets to the universe. Keep asking “Why?” “How?” until you discover them. 5. Write a lot of code, build a lot of things. Build for work. Build for play. Practice makes perfect.

Terry Fox was a cancer patient who ran 5,373 km across Canada in just 143 days before he died. Terry thrilled the entire country. His goal was to receive one Canadian dollar for every Canadian in the population (then 24 million people), and he achieved his goal by raising 24.17 million Canadian dollars in February 1981. A year after Terry Fox's death, the Terry Fox Foundation was created, which promotes amateur races across Canada and in several countries to support the fight against cancer. According to the Terry Fox Foundation, more than C$715 million has already been raised for cancer research on Terry Fox's behalf.
