If you’re not reading the code, whether explicitly or through agentic inquiry, one or more of these is true: ○ You’re a beginner ○ Software is throwaway ○ You’re prototyping ○ You have no users / revenue ○ You’re taking on debt & risk ○ Your problems are basic And btw. All of this is fine. But the reality is that models are still not at the “full autonomy” stage yet. They make rookie mistakes, they go down bad architectural paths. I just had the best model in the world add a nonsensical 700ms delay to “settle” something and it told me “you’re right, I was cargo-culting” 🤨 I am on the camp that this need will diminish more and more. Most code is indeed going to be assembly-like. But we also have the global internet and software infrastructure riding on these models and narrative, and we have to respect that.

Intellect should be judged not by the words a person say but by the outcome of their actions. Not even the actions themselves but their outcome. Chess grandmasters make seemingly stupid moves until you suddenly realize that you lost.

The entire idea of AI code generation is based on the assumption that a "prompt" can express your technical intention. But as soon as you start to get good at programming you stop thinking about it in english and instead switch to some abstract mental representation.

Just want to make sure people understand what they are arguing, because I've seen this argument come up, and it is not fact-based. The AI tools most commonly used today were not trained exclusively on publicly available and/or purchased books, films, and games. It was trained on literally pirated works. Multiple major AI providers have admitted to this in court already. And it is not as if modern AIs were trained on one or two pirated things, but potentially millions of them. We do not currently know exactly how many, because the furthest-along case (Anthropic) settled out-of-court for a billion-dollar settlement. So just to be clear, the argument being made in the quote below - while an argument we could (and perhaps should) have in the future - is not one we need to have right now, because it is irrelevant to the current facts. We can confine ourselves today to arguing about literal piracy - the analogy is if artists usually learned to draw by going to the bookstore, stealing all the books there without paying for them, and bringing them home to keep.
