My freshman year I had amazing teachers that changed the way I would think forever. My history teacher promised he would fundamentally change the way we viewed history and he was right. He allowed open notes to his test but disallowed use of the text book then taught the most fascinating in depth view of historical events I’d ever heard. I became engaged like never before, filling an 80-page college-ruled notebook before my first test. I scored a surprised and ruthlessly embarrassing failing grade which accounted for 25% of my grade but I was not alone. So did ALL of my class—except for 2. Both received near perfect scores and were used as examples to us all. They were the first boy two that actually read the book. The lesson I was suppose to understand: If you want to know what really happened in WWII, you can’t just read our government sponsored history book. You’ll have to go to the library and read Japanese, German, Polish, Russian history too. What I learned as an idiotic teen: that’s too much work. Copy your neighbors answers and move on. What I learned looking back: propaganda comes in leaflet-sized half-truths like reels or shorts. The truth is deep rabbit holes of divergent long-form takes and libraries of books. Truth is nuanced and expansive, and people are generally incurious and easily satiated. Stay curious. Stay skeptical.
