@Chris_Davis66 @Banglaphile @NC_Renic Yes, but you need subject matter (English literature in this case) to develop the skills. What is unique about PhD programmes is that they develop these skills in a comparatively short time, which is why PhD graduates are attractive to employers.

@GhostCalledMaat @Philosopotter1 @NC_Renic PhD graduates develop a collection of skills that are very valuable for complex tasks. In this, and other cases, the skills were highly relevant to that incident. All I'm saying is that you need all expertise, academic and non-academic alike. Everyone has something to contribute.

@GhostCalledMaat @Philosopotter1 @NC_Renic I don't live in the UK so I cannot speak for that country's police. Where I live, the foiling of two big terrorist attacks by my colleagues, including the one with the literature PhD, suggests my arguments about the value of doctoral study do hold water.
