Assuming the current reports are true, suffice to say I'm waiting to hear the supposed rationale for laying off one of the best game engine teams in the world. Even assuming you are switching all your projects to licensed engines, these same people would instantly be your most valuable programmers for working with and extending whatever engine you license.

If Marathon gets shut down it would be the best game to ever close shop. I have a hard time seeing that happen. It’s the first feature complete FPS I’ve played in 10+ years. Pulled me in on day one and sinks its teeth further every day. Just wish more people would try it

I have been trying to find something meaningful to say about the Id Software layoffs. My “Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand” statement isn’t aging well, and this is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month. I’m saddened, but I can’t muster anger or outrage over it. I don’t have access to the books, but I suspect that Id Software was a marginal business from Microsoft’s perspective. I believe the reports that Minecraft revenues have been carrying several other studios. To continue being produced long term, games need to succeed, not just be beloved. Games are competing with every other option for spending your leisure time and money, and the competition is brutal. You can’t rule out the possibility that executives are idiots, but that shouldn’t be your default belief. I don’t think there is any obvious path that would have doubled the revenue from Id games. Could they have gotten more with a different pricing strategy? Could they have created more things for fans to buy? Could they have cost effectively marketed in a way that reached more players that would have loved and bought the games? Could they have changed the game designs and broadened the appeal to more players without alienating existing ones? Could they have produced the games at a lower cost, faster or cheaper? I really don’t know. The game isn’t over yet, and I hope the studio rallies through.

I truly don't think Microsofts executive division was informed on the cuts they made that well. Asking for more games...faster... that use the idtech engine and then axing a large portion of the team that works on that engine is a incredibly confusing and frustrating decision.

Imagine how tone deaf youd need to be to hold the continued brain trust of the studio that defined the PC as a gaming platform, a studio that in the public eye defines the peak of technical mastery, who’s still firing off a 83 metacritic game on a “bad” day, and rip its arms off.

The Doom games are impressive because idTech has high control over how the renderer worked with the GPU, which allowed great performance despite huge levels with many enemies and without frequent asset stream hitching. It's hard to get that with a one-size-fits-all solution.

Without Engine guys, the brand/company is dead. Whoever thinks they can leverage UE5/Unity/Godot, it's like trying to build a new RAM factory from scratch and abandon your current one because it costs money. It's going to take a lot of time and money.

I think the next 2-3 years might be the best for indie developers. As big corporations work more towards killing the AAA industry and pivoting to UE6, more and more games will begin to look the same and have similar AI-generated content. Your time to shine as a solo dev.

The unceremonious decimation of ID tech is probably the biggest act of incompetence I've seen in the gaming industry.

"Yeah we know he created the visual design for much of the new Doom trilogy since 2016 but eh we think ChatGPT can do better." Sorry, I'm salty today. This industry is so frustrating.
