The band on a woolly bear doesn't predict the winter. It's closer to being a record of the summer that's coming to a close. The caterpillar starts out mostly black, and the rust-colored band widens with each molt. So a wide band means an older caterpillar that's been eating longer, and that usually means a long, warm growing season with plenty of food. That caterpillar isn't hurrying to build a cocoon. It's looking for a place to spend the entire winter as a caterpillar. Under leaf litter, inside a log, beneath loose bark. And when the cold arrives, its heart stops, its gut freezes, and ice forms in the spaces between its cells while cryoprotectants in its tissues keep the cells themselves from rupturing. It stays that way for months. In spring it thaws out, feeds for a short while, spins a cocoon out of silk and its own bristles, and emerges as an Isabella tiger moth. Most people have never connected the two. Its Arctic cousin takes this to an absurd place. Up in the high Arctic, the summer is so short that the caterpillar can only feed for a few weeks a year, so it freezes and thaws over and over, for roughly seven years, before it has enough stored energy to pupate at all. It spends nearly its whole life frozen. It's active for about 5% of it. So the practical part: the woolly bear crossing the road in October is house hunting. It needs leaf litter, a log, a brush pile, a corner of the yard nobody touches. If you rake every leaf and bag it, you threw the house away with it.

Those big white webs appearing at the ends of tree branches in late summer are probably fall webworms, and if the tree is healthy and established, you should leave them alone. Fall webworm is native to North America. The caterpillars wrap leaves at the ends of branches in silk and feed inside, sometimes expanding the web until it looks absolutely horrifying. They eat hundreds of kinds of deciduous plants, including pecan, walnut, hickory, cherry, persimmon and mulberry. Fall webworms do most of their feeding late in the growing season, after established trees have already produced and stored much of the energy they need for next year. Losing some leaves in August or September is much less costly than losing them in spring. They're easy to confuse with eastern tent caterpillars, but there's a simple tell: eastern tent caterpillars make their tents in branch crotches in spring. Fall webworms wrap leaves at the ends of branches in late summer. They're also food. More than 80 predators and parasitoids have been documented attacking fall webworms in North America, including birds, paper wasps, yellowjackets and tiny parasitoid wasps and flies. So don't panic when you see one, and don't set it on fire. Burning webs while they're attached to a tree can injure the tree and is specifically discouraged by Extension specialists. If you truly can't stand looking at it, tear the web open with a long stick. That exposes the caterpillars to predators without removing a healthy branch. Otherwise leave it. It looks like a tree problem, but mostly, it's bird and wasp food in a bag.

They call us fascists while they act like the Brownshirts. I have watched it with my own eyes. Masked men and women in black, faces covered, moving through parks and city streets like a mobile enforcement unit. They surround people collecting signatures for women’s sports. They strip naked to intimidate and disrupt. They film those who testify at city council so the footage can be used to find addresses, employers, and families. They carry bats painted with slogans that read “Beat TERFs” or worse. They scream “Nazi” and “fascist” at gay men, women, and ordinary citizens who refuse to pretend that sex is a feeling. And when the cameras are rolling, they present themselves as the anti-fascist resistance. This is not protest. This is not “punching up.” This is the operational style of the Sturmabteilung updated for the age of smartphones and institutional capture. The original Brownshirts were not primarily soldiers. They were political enforcers. Their job was to control the streets, disrupt meetings of opponents, intimidate speakers, and make certain ideas too costly to express in public. They used anonymity, coordinated numbers, sudden violence, and the constant threat of more violence. They treated political disagreement as contamination that had to be driven out of shared spaces. They did it while claiming to defend the people against existential enemies. The rhetoric was righteous. The method was authoritarian. Look at the parallel. Radical trans activism, fused with Antifa street culture, has produced a modern version of the same machine. The uniform is black bloc instead of brown. The target is no longer “Jews and Marxists” but “TERFs,” “transphobes,” and anyone who states biological reality out loud. The tools are the same: masks for deniability, physical intimidation, doxxing as economic and social punishment, and the deliberate creation of no-go zones for dissent. City council chambers, public parks, library meetings, and signature tables become contested territory that must be cleared of the wrong opinions. When women gather to talk about single-sex spaces or sports, the response is not argument. It is surround, scream, film, and, when the opportunity appears, strike. I have lived the consequences. I have been chased. I have been surrounded. I have watched equipment stolen and threats delivered while authorities look the other way or treat the aggressors as the aggrieved party. I have seen the same networks that paint red graffiti and celebrate political violence turn around and demand that society treat their feelings as sacred and our speech as violence. The inversion is deliberate. By labeling every opponent a fascist, they grant themselves permission to use fascist methods. The accusation becomes the license. This is not every person who identifies as transgender, and it is not every leftist. It is a militant subculture that has been allowed to operate with remarkable impunity in certain cities and institutions. That impunity is the tell. When one side’s street violence is excused as “mostly peaceful” or “self-defense” while the other side’s ordinary political activity is treated as an existential threat, the system is no longer neutral. It has chosen a side and outsourced enforcement to the people in the masks. The Brownshirts did not need to control the entire state at first. They needed only to make the cost of opposition higher than most citizens were willing to pay. That is the real danger here. When people stop circulating petitions, stop testifying, stop speaking their names in public because they fear the bat, the doxx, or the job loss, the public square has already been partially conquered. The ideology does not have to win the argument if it can simply make the argument too dangerous to have. I will not pretend this is complicated. Sex is real. Women are not a costume. Children are not experiments. Gay people are not “trans” waiting to happen. These are not radical statements. They are observations available to any honest mind. The fact that stating them can now get you surrounded by masked activists with painted bats is the clearest evidence that something authoritarian has taken root under the banner of liberation. Call it what it is. The black-clad enforcers who chase people from parks, photograph council speakers for harassment, and celebrate violence against women who defend sex-based rights are not anti-fascists. They are the modern Brownshirts. They wear different colors and chant different slogans, but the function is identical: enforce orthodoxy through fear, silence dissent through intimidation, and claim the moral high ground while doing it. I am the Transphobic Historian. I will keep saying so.

Some of the crazy policies Democrats have in store for next January in Olympia: - a statewide payroll tax on jobs, modeled after Seattle’s disastrous jump start head tax - a new tax on unrealized capital gains, which is money you’ve invested for things like retirement but have not collected - tripling property taxes and increasing it annually by inflation and population - reduce the threshold of the new state income tax below $1M to apply to the middle class if not defeated in November - a new “margins tax” scheme (analysis tbd) - more reckless spending and more deficits where democrats cut from the vulnerable in programs that work, to give even more to their special interests in programs that do nothing but make everything worse. - effectively eliminating juvenile detention for juvenile gang offenders like the Bite of Seattle shooter - using state government to sell and distribute hard drugs like fentanyl - eliminating penalties for sex offenders who pray on children - close down prisons and early release violent criminals into communities - reduce law enforcement, eliminate bail, and destroy our criminal justice system by making it impossible to obtain a public defense, effectively releasing criminals before they ever see a court room - redistricting Republican lawmakers out of existence to create a permanent and generational democratic super majority (the most dangerous) You might have read this list and had a gut reaction that this is rhetorical politics. But every one of the things I just listed are actual legislation that democrats have introduced in Olympia recently or policy recommendations passed to them by their allies. They’ve already promised these. All are just a few things Republicans were able to defeat along with the few moderate Democrats left in Olympia. If Democrats in Olympia are emboldened by results in November, and the moderate Democrats replaced by socialist Democrats, this is just a taste of what we are in for. I don’t know about you, but that list is absolutely a devastating failure that will take reasonable people a generation to come back from. 60% of WA voters who did not vote in the last election were Republicans and Independents. That means we have an opportunity to save ourselves before it’s too late, push back together against socialism and communism, and demand reason and common sense once again. If the list I provided isn’t motivation to vote, nothing is. I’ve heard “what do republicans in WA stand for?” - free markets and capitalism, not cronyism or socialism - lower taxes and more of your money left in your own pocket, we introduced billions in tax relief from property taxes, gas taxes, sales taxes, and more. - combatting our drug crisis with accountability and treatment, not free needles and houses with no rules. - protecting victims of crime, including sexual assault and domestic violence survivors, and protecting children from abuse and neglect. - a small government that protects those who cannot protect themselves, and does what it’s supposed to do very efficiently. - fiscal responsibility with balanced budgets that live within their means and produce tangible results for all Washingtonians. - ensuring our social safety net lifts people up and makes them whole and productive, not forever dependent on politicians - promoting justice and accountability with a robust and fair public safety system that is well-funded, respected, and supported. - protecting your constitutional rights as found in the U.S. and WA State Constitutions, not by erasing the rights others find inconvenient. - promoting a transportation system with high quality roads that reduce traffic, increase freight mobility, and improve our environmental quality - with transit systems that are efficient, clean, and safe. - infrastructure improvements that help development of housing and jobs, improve the quality of life in WA, and lower costs

BREAKING - This mother and daughter paid $1,000 per ticket to attend today’s Indiana Fever vs. Atlanta Dream game at State Farm Arena, specifically to see Sophie Cunningham — a woman they respect and admire for taking a clear stance against biological men in women’s sports. They wore XX/XY shirts in support of that same message. The back of the daughter’s shirt simply read “For the girls.” Arena staff gave them two options: cover the shirts or leave. They were handed shirts to put on over their own. Earlier in the game, a woman wearing a “Protect Trans Rights” shirt was prominently featured on the Jumbotron. Only after receiving that stadium spotlight was she also told to cover her shirt. A women’s league run by women decided a shirt saying “For the girls” was too offensive and controversial to wear. Meanwhile, State Farm Arena will put a pro-trans message on the big screen — but won’t allow a shirt that states a basic biological truth. The WNBA and stadiums like State Farm Arena continue to be a national embarrassment. Before you cut your perennials back this fall, know what you're throwing away. Dead stems aren't debris or garbage. Native bees use hollow and pithy stalks for nests, some butterflies and moths overwinter among dead vegetation, and birds keep working seed heads long after the flowers are gone. There's an important wrinkle, though. Research from NC State found that bees generally weren't nesting in intact stems during their first winter. They need a broken or cut opening to reach the hollow center or soft pith. So you don't necessarily have to leave every perennial untouched until spring. Once the plants have died back, you can cut suitable stems to roughly 12 to 24 inches instead of cutting them to the ground. That exposed end becomes next year's front door. And here's the part people miss: don't cut that stubble down the following year. Bees may move into those stems during spring and summer and remain inside through the next winter. By the time you're doing cleanup again, the ugly dead stalk you want to remove may be occupied habitat. New growth will usually hide the old stems anyway, so leave them until they break down naturally. Bee balm, coneflower, goldenrod, asters, Joe Pye weed, elderberry, raspberry and blackberry are all good candidates. The rule is simple: don't cut everything to the ground. Cut some stems high, then leave the old ones alone.

The easiest wildlife habitat you can build in your yard is a six foot wide strip of lawn you stop mowing. Pick the strip along the back fence or the useless corner. Mow around it, throw some logs and stones into it, add a brush pile, toss your fall leaves onto it, scatter native flower seeds intoit, and let God sort it out. Extra credit: watch what grows and yank any plants you can identify as non-native or invasive. Grass grows tall enough for skipper caterpillars to actually finish developing. Bumblebee queens can find protected ground and old burrows. Firefly larvae get damp litter instead of a mower passing overhead every week. Violets, asters, and fleabane get a chance to flower instead of being mowed within three inches of their lives. Taller vegetation and litter create shade near the soil, places to hide, stems to climb and overwinter in, flowers to feed from, seeds to eat, and cover for animals moving across the yard. Have grumpy neighbors? The trick is to make it look deliberate. Mow a clean border around it. Put it against a fence or tree line. Give it an obvious edge. Put up a cute "we're making wildlife habitat" type sign. Make it read like "this is supposed to be here" not "we forgot to mow." If you want to maintain it as an open patch rather than eventually letting shrubs take over, give it an occasional annual cut appropriate to your region and what grows there. Otherwise, leave it alone.
