discovery isn't the problem. adobe via flagship: ai-referred retail visits now generate 53% more revenue (last year they were worth half). traffic up ~13x retail, ~20x travel — still under 1% of visits. walmart sparky items sold 4x yoy. the money showed up at the shelf. the block is authorization, disputes, and audit.

mastercard just admitted 22 startups into start path's first agentic commerce class. two days earlier, a scan of 80 large us/eu merchants found zero new brands letting an agent complete checkout. discovery traffic is up 13x. payments are still frozen. this is a network assembling identity, rails, fraud, recon, and even lloyd's-backed ai insurance because the storefronts won't move.

and yet visa's ceo, on stage with investors, said the quiet part: people research with ai, then go pay on the merchant's website themselves. trust is the one-word answer he gave for why. 75% of people distrust an agent with their money - though that drops to 61% once visa is named as involved.

anthropic shipped an open-source ai shopping agent blueprint on purpose without a payment layer - no wallet, no catalog, no ads. seven days later mastercard launched a whole new product to be that wallet. visa's own ceo told investors last week that 75% of people don't trust an ai agent to spend their money. that number didn't slow mastercard down for even a week. that's the real signal in agentic commerce right now: the card networks aren't waiting for trust to catch up, they're racing to own the plumbing before anyone else does. whoever owns the rails when trust finally clicks wins the decade. infra is way ahead of demand. that's usually where the money gets made 👀

fraud is the hole. darwinium's bank research: 48% allow ai transactions by default and watch after the fact. 31% block unless explicitly allowed. nobody shares a picture of what a legitimate agent looks like at authorization. if apa ships one durable artifact this year, it should be a representation of agent identity that a risk engine can actually consume.

visa and mastercard just joined the same 26-member working group to write how ai agents get authorized to spend. rain convened it. no spec. no charter. if you're still treating agent checkout as a product race, you're late. the fight moved to who writes the permission rules.
