A plague on both your houses: the Guardian’s false equivalence on Iran The Guardian’s editorial board has delivered its verdict on the current state of the war on Iran: “everyone loses when the US and Iran overplay their hands”. Strikes and bluster “on both sides”. A “doom loop” in which two equally reckless parties must be “coaxed back to their senses”. The editorial itself concedes, in passing, that this is an “illegal war launched by the US and Israel”. It notes that thousands in Iran and Lebanon, “including civilians – many of them children”. In other words, the paper knows perfectly well who the aggressor is and who the victim is. And then our friends a the Guardian dissolve all responsibility for the war into a fog of symmetry. The United States – which launched an illegal war, assassinated Iran’s head of state, and now threatens to “decimate and destroy all areas of Iran” – is placed on exactly the same moral plane as the country it attacked. Both have “overplayed their hands”; both need a stern word from the grown-ups of the so-called international community. This is the characteristic manoeuvre of the liberal press, and in many ways it’s more insidious than the open warmongering of the likes of Fox News. The Guardian does not cheer the bombing; it simply refuses to distinguish between the arsonist and the people whose house is on fire. “A plague on both your houses” is dressed up as sober, above-the-fray wisdom – but it is nothing of the kind. To place an equals sign between an aggressor and its victim is not neutrality; it is a political act that serves the aggressor, because it strips away the very thing that would justify opposing the war: the recognition that one side is committing a crime and the other is resisting it. A country subjected to an illegal war has every right to defend itself, and to control its own waters. That is not “overplaying its hand”. It is the most elementary right of a sovereign nation. The rest of the world does not need to “coax both sides back to their senses”. It needs to name the aggressor, demand an end to the aggression, and stand with the country under attack. Anything less is complicity.

On Friday, Spanish police abducted comrade Fergie Chambers on behalf of the Trump admin, now attempting to extradite him on baseless political charges that could total up to 30 years in federal prison. Because of the millions Fergie has given to Palestine fundraisers, anti-imperialist organizations, and bail funds for protestors, the US is targeting him with completely unsubstantiated charges as part of their broader war of domestic repression. The federal charges include “international money laundering… with the intent to provide material support to and resources to foreign terrorist organizations," according to a sealed indictment reviewed by @TheGrayzoneNews. The indictment "offers no evidence that Chambers has donated any money to 'foreign terrorist organizations.' It merely states 'Chambers made numerous transfers of funds from banks in the US to banks in Tunisia,' where he relocated in late 2023." Free Fergie! Free all political prisoners!

There is simply no justification for the United States pushing through vessels along the Omani coastline in the Strait of Hormuz. You can cry and scream about "freedom of navigation", but at the end of the day, the Memorandum of Understanding was very clear that Iran would control the traffic through the Strait of Hormuz during the initial 60-day window. Time and time again, the United States has shredded the MOU by attempting to retroactively alter the terms because they didn't "like them". Of course you didn't like them. They suck... because you LOST. Oil sanction waivers a la Article 10? Torched. No new sanctions a la Article 9? Blown up. Iranian administration of traffic a la Article 5? Nope. You can whine all day long about how it's "wrong" for Iran to strike those vessels, but this is a rational response to a war of choice from the United States. You don't get to claim "right vs. wrong" when the Trump Administration is solely to blame for this situation in the first place. The Strait of Hormuz was open before this war started. The REASON that the United States was attempting an Operation Freedom 2.0 along the Omani Route was BECAUSE they were trying to actively undermine the Iranian control of the Strait. They were trying to actively push through enough vessels in a short enough period of time to shift the strategic landscape of the conflict. I have seen time and time again people claim, "Iran doesn't know what's best for them. If they just didn't strike vessels, they would get massive sanctions relief"... No, they wouldn't. Because President Trump and the United States had no INTENTION of sticking to the MOU. The goal was to use this 60-day window to shift the landscape so that they could topple the regime or secure outcomes they could not have in the initial MOU. This isn't "the US operating in good faith and those pesky Iranians messed everything up". This is the United States blatantly trying to unilaterally alter the terms of the MOU by shredded the oil waivers, sanctioning new entities, and pushing vessels through the Omani Route.

Every year, imperial propagandists ritualistically invoke this or that version of the 1989 events at Tiananmen Square to portray China as a murderous dictatorship. And every year, scores of people seek to rebut the claims by appeals to video footage and other evidence of what happened. But I think we can be more forceful: Unlike in the Soviet Union, the Western-backed counterrevolution failed in China. Looking at the historic mortality crisis caused by capitalist restoration in Eastern Europe, this fact alone likely saved tens of millions of lives — and prevented imperialism from extinguishing the flame of socialism altogether. From that perspective, the events of 1989 represent a major victory for socialism and the global working class. This, no doubt, is the primary source of the imperialists’ lingering outrage.
