📚 How Current Medical Students Can Pay 0% Interest on Some of Their Loans 📚 First off, this is all bonkers. How this loan system has developed over the years is one of the most asinine things I’ve ever seen. Still, it’s good for students and trainees to do all they can to benefit from the rules put into place. The new SAVE plan forgives all interest accrual above and beyond the minimum required payment. If your income is $32,000 or less, your payment is effectively zero dollars and therefore your interest rate is effectively 0%. This scenario applies to most medical students, so how can they benefit while they’re in school? There are two 2️⃣ types of loans that they can place under this more favorable situation, while still in school. It involves entering repayment and getting onto the SAVE plan. 1. Waive the In-school Deferment for Undergraduate or Other Loans from Previous Higher Education For regular Direct loans, entering repayment is not allowed until you graduate and pass the six-month grace period. Caveat: You can do a federal loan consolidation application right after *graduation* to jump out of the grace period but NOT while still in school. You can, however, waive the in-school deferment for loans from previous schooling. TASK!!👇🏻 1️⃣ You must contact your servicer and request that the in-school deferment be waived on undergrad and other previous loans and then apply for them to be put on the SAVE plan. This would effectively put your undergraduate and other previously acquired loans on a 0% interest rate, while you complete school! 2. Waive the In-school Deferment for *Current* PLUS Loans For PLUS loans, in-school deferment is optional. TASK!! 👇🏻 2️⃣ Again, contact your servicer and waive the deferment for PLUS loans and get them on the SAVE plan. The PLUS loan interest rate is 8.05% 🤯 This unpaid interest subsidy could save you a ton in otherwise accrued interest! You will have to do this task every semester when you take out new loans. And it would be wise to check your loan status 1x month just to make sure they’re still in repayment on SAVE. Some have asked about circumventing direct loans and just taking out PLUS loans in order to benefit from this subsidy. The problem with the strategy is that we don’t know if the government would close this loophole. If they did, all of your loans would suddenly be getting charged a much higher rate with no recourse.
