The world has lost a man who redefined what is possible. Nirmal Purja, or Nims, was a bright light of inspiration to countless people. In the Brigade of Gurkhas we are proud to call him one of our own. But his achievements belong to none of us, because it was he himself who showed us that the easy path is not the one that leads to achievement. He died on Broad Peak in Pakistan in a tragic accident that also took the lives of others from around the world, all mountaineers united in the spirit of challenge and human endeavour. We mourn them all. But we also celebrate remarkable lives, and none more so than that of Nims. A soldier, a Gurkha, a mountaineer, a husband, a father, a son and a brother. We should nuke the filibuster to pass the SAVE America Act. If we don’t have the votes to nuke the filibuster, we should put the SAVE America Act on the floor and debate it until it passes, requiring filibustering senators to speak and making clear that if they stop speaking, we can “call the question” and pass it with a simple majority. If for some reason we can’t do that—and to be clear, there’s no legitimate reason why we can’t—then we should use budget reconciliation to pass it. But not passing the SAVE America Act is not an option. Neither is taking a lengthy recess without doing any of the above.

West Point's Modern War Institute publishes you; you were an inaugural Harding Fellow under the Chief of Staff of the Army's writing initiative. When you talk about the profession, a lot of the profession listens. (I have a lot of questions about your publication’s financial ties to AUSA and your alleged friendship with the Secretary of Army himself, Dan Driscoll. But that’s out of scope for this response.) Above, you told active-duty leaders not to treat the press as the enemy. Don't be hostile. Don't insert yourself into the hot-button issues that divide Americans. Don't publicly take sides. Serve all of it, not one part of it. It's a good rule. I'm not going to argue with a word of it. I want to talk about the man giving it… YOU, Mr. Breyly… because the record you built in public says something your homily doesn't. You didn't set out to have a platform. In 2015 your own About page said it plainly: "This blog represents only my personal views. I do not plan on using this space as a platform." "About Me" became "About the Team." That's the whole arc in two lines, and you wrote both of them. You've narrated what happened, too. On one of your podcasts: "I've gotten softer… because of my identity as an army officer I've adopted some of the things that our organization does… I'm the problem now." You said the thing out loud that @infantrydort is attempting to reform, and filed it under maturity. Here's why the side you're on never feels like a side. You didn't build that reach alone. The Chief of Staff of the Army sat on your show and said junior officers no longer have to "sneak into Joe's office" to talk about writing. A Department of the Army senior enlisted leader thanked you, on your own podcast, "for helping the Army tell its story… super helpful." You announced that the site had "joined forces with the Harding Project, the Chief of Staff of the Army's initiative," and added: "The Chief is listening." Your reach, your access, your standing… a great deal of it was issued by the institutions you’re lecturing @infantrydort on not criticising. That's not an accusation; it's the plainest reading of your own record. And when all of your capital comes from one place, defending that place feels like character, maturity, whatever. Watch what you do with criticism, then. When a service secretary raised the problem of bad leaders, you turned it inward: "you have zero control over the leaders who are in charge of you but the aspect that you do have agency is the example that you seek out." A structural complaint about the institution comes back out as a lesson in personal development. The institution is never the thing that has to change; you are. That is the tell in your post, too. Read what you actually flag as the danger. Not the institutions… the criticism of it. Hostility to the press. Partisanship. Taking sides. In your frame the transgression is always the questioning, never the thing being questioned. You've made deference to the institution sound like neutrality, and its critics sound like the ones with the character problem. So this isn't really a call for restraint, Joe, it’s your immune response to the institutions who give you your living. When people press on the institution that made you, you write a homily explaining why they're the problem: too hostile, too partisan, too willing to take a side. You are taking a side. You always have. You just can't see the institution as a side, because it issued your platform, credentials your standing, and thanks you on tape for telling its story. You're not the honest broker above the fray. You're the establishment's lapdog, and you’re too blind to see how far away from reform capability that you are. So instead, you attack those of us who are trying to bring about genuine reform.

Listen up. This could arguably be the most strategically important post I write all year. Let me explain something about the Blue Angels flyby. First, I’m not an aviation expert, but there are very few people in the world who have experienced, reviewed, and written an entire damn book on maritime incidents. 90% of the hot takes about how dangerous the flyby was are from people who have absolutely no idea how to evaluate risk. But this post isn’t about them; it’s also not about the aviators who are liberal and are just looking to dunk on Hegseth. This post is about the remaining 5% of aviators who are pro-MAGA military veterans who are telling you this flyby was exceedingly dangerous. These people, who I love and respect and have way more aviation expertise and flight hours than me, have spent an entire career in the system learning safety and how to evaluate risk. Not just any system but the very best system in the world: the US Military’s risk assessment system. Many went on to fly for the airlines, which has a different system but one modeled after the very best system. So when they tell you this flyby exceeded risk tolerance measures… believe them. That said, there are countless ways to assess risk. Most of them are really bad or flawed in one way or another. Some of them are strange but okay. None of them are better than the US military’s system (as far as I’m aware). But there is one critical flaw in a fantastic risk assessment system that everyone knows: the enemy knows it too. There are entire buildings in China analyzing our risk management systems looking for flaws and ways to push pilots to abandon missions. They are hard at work exploiting our system. Now, I won’t go into detail on other ways to assess this risk, ways in which this maneuver doesn’t set off red flags, because I’ll get pummeled by pilots for missing details. But please know there are other risk management systems. These systems haven’t been tested because low-intensity conflict does not give the enemy an opportunity to exploit our system. When you have the best system, why change it? China DOES have the ability to exploit our systems & the solution to that is adaptation. Adaptation that needs to be tested. Adaptations that are discussed in the very best schools like TOPGUN & USAF Weapons School. But even those guys don’t have much time to adapt new risk assessment systems because they are busy creating new offensive & defensive tactics. The point is just because this maneuver may have exceeded current flight safety guidelines does not inherently mean it’s unsafe. What it means is that it doesn’t fit in the existing guidelines. And even the best risk assessment guidelines have flaws, as all flight accident investigators know. We don’t know what means of risk measurement and assessment the Blue Angels used, but we can infer it wasn’t the standard set of guidelines Navy veterans learned. We can infer this because the Blue Angels are the top professionals in the world, and they DO NOT do unsafe things for lols. We also know from @SECNAV that they had a full safety debriefing, and this maneuver passed their risk analysis with flying colors. But why this post is important has nothing to do with the maneuver itself. The point is we MUST adapt & test new criteria in the event of a war with China. And there’s nobody better to develop and test new guidelines & criteria than the Blue Angels. And again, I’m not a pilot, don’t go out and do something dumb because you wanted to rationalize doing something dumb because your analysis based on another system says it’s ok. But I am saying I worked on incredibly dangerous, record-breaking operations offshore, ones nobody had developed any systems for. Some of that work we did is now baked in as best practices and taught in classrooms for people doing what we did again. But in developing those we had to pick among several good options. I’m still not sure we picked the best one.

Right now I am writing this in tears. Thank you @SECNAV @HungCao_VA from the bottom of my heart. The US Merchant Marine has been defunded, denigrated, and stripped of respect for decades. The result? The Navy pulled 17 critical logistics ships manned by Merchant Mariners from the active fleet, and only 86 🇺🇸 cargo ships remain in international service against China’s thousands. Over the last three years, what started as a tiny group with @brentdsadler @Heritage gained traction through @michaelgwaltz and snowballed into countless meetings with Senators, Admirals, and senior White House advisors. Together with dozens of patriots, and with the personal support of President Trump, we wrote the SHIPS for America Act, the Maritime Executive Order & the Maritime Action Plan. We overturned the UN carbon tax that penalized shipping, fought for new USTR rules, stood up @JerryHendrixII’s White House shipbuilding office and a new Navy shipbuilding plan, won critical support from @SecWar & got an actual USMM Captain, Steve Carmel, nominated as Commandant of the USMM. It hasn’t all been unicorns and rainbows. We are still fighting to get the SHIPS Act through Congress and to get the bureaucratic state to execute the executive orders. But my biggest frustration, one I raised at EVERY SINGLE MEETING, was this: we are swinging for grand slams while nobody guards first base. And the easiest bunt of all is the most basic sign of respect: a service ribbon for US Merchant Mariners who served in combat. My wife displays a single ribbon from her service in Iraq. Everyone who enters our house asks about it, giving me the chance to be the proud service spouse I am. But that combat ribbon, one of dozens on the books for Merchant Mariners, is the only one regularly issued to our service & was essentially forgotten during the Obama years. @PeteButtigieg refused to issue it when the USMM returned to combat in the Red Sea. That ribbon is what kept me pushing. At every meeting with the top people in DC, I asked for one simple bunt: issue the ribbon to our mariners in combat. Nobody did. A few tried. A few made phone calls. Most ignored the request, and some rolled their eyes. One even told me: “This is ridiculous, John. We are budgeting billions for ships and you won’t shut up about a ribbon. Ask any mariner if they’d rather have a new ship or a ribbon and 100% will say a ship.” They aren’t wrong. The problem is ships take time, we are three years in and they don’t have a ship. A ribbon can be issued in days. The bigger problem is they don’t understand Colonel John Boyd: “People, then ideas, then platforms & technology. In that order.” The fact that nobody is asking for a ribbon is exactly what makes it powerful. A few weeks ago I met with Hung Cao and opened with the same ask I’ve made hundreds of times: “Dust off an @MSCSealift medals & give one to the crews in combat off Iran.” He said what most have said: “Give me a few weeks, I’ll look into it.” I’ve heard that before, so I got mad. Madder still when @shesova told me a USMM World War II hero had been overlooked for a medal. I called my Commandant & said, “GD it Steve, we still have a WW2 veteran who’s been overlooked.” “Give me a few weeks John, I’ll look into it.” 🙄 Well, I woke up today to an email from Sheila inviting me and @SecDuffy to a ceremony awarding Charles Mills, World War II USMM combat veteran the USMM Outstanding Achievement Medal. Wow! Then @MikeSchuler published this today. I asked for a simple USMM combat medal nobody would recognize. Instead President Trump & Hung Cao delivered a Presidential Unit Citation, one of the most prestigious awards in the military. Yesterday @HungCao_VA said the Navy’s top 3 priorities are people, shipbuilding & the homeland. Senior officers have said that for years. The difference is Hung Cao means it. “Acta Non Verba,” deeds not words, is USMM Acadmy’s motto & boy did Secretary Cao deliver! PEOPLE FIRST 🇺🇸

Mamdani closed the ferry to the main viewing area morning of the US Navy parade. He made it significantly more difficult than usual for the Navy to obtain permits. He put up barricades that misdirected crowds. He threatened to coopt a Naval event with his political rhetoric forcing the Navy to cancel. He stalked a sailor and engineered a joke to catch him laughing for his own propaganda. He used the Navy’s own safety culture against them to keep warships far from the crowds. He promised to promote events then did nothing to promote them. He did favors for local media in exchange for them underplaying the event. These are all facts from multiple sources from O5 all the way up to admirals. But they aren’t the most grievous facts, those I cannot write without official confirmation or at least a source willing to speak on background. And he did it all via numerous NYC departments and representatives as a distributed attack while claiming he himself was supporting the Navy. He is in full rebellion against the federal government, the US military and the Republic for which it stands. And worse: he’s smart and was highly effective at sabotaging the event which was originally planned to be the biggest Naval Parade in 50 years.

I did not know I was going to get to witness @SecRollins and @SBA_Kelly sign a Memorandum of Understanding yesterday that allows landowners across the country to report and flag to the federal government what is happening to their land. It was an honor to witness this. One of the ways I got into contact with @johnrich and the @USDA was by filling out the form in the Lawfare portal that’s now available on the USDA website.
