Today I’m building an MVP for a law firm that wants to rethink how its internal operations work. Not another piece of software. One internal system to manage cases, clients, documents, deadlines and the workflows around them. A few things going into the MVP 🧵 1/ Case management Every matter gets its own workspace: • status • responsible lawyer • client • deadlines • documents • notes • activity history No more information scattered across email, folders and spreadsheets. 2/ Workflow management Different types of legal work follow different processes. The system should know what needs to happen next, who owns it and what is blocked. The goal is simple: fewer processes living inside someone’s head. 3/ Deadlines and tasks Legal work is extremely deadline-driven. Each case can generate: • tasks • reminders • internal deadlines • external deadlines • recurring actions With a clear view of what requires attention today. 4/ Client management A lightweight CRM connected directly to the legal work. Clients, contacts, companies, matters and communication history all linked together. No duplicated records across different tools. 5/ Document management Documents organised around the matter they belong to. Templates, versions, categories and quick access from the case itself. Eventually this can become much more interesting with AI. 6/ Internal notes and communication Context should stay attached to the process. Instead of important decisions disappearing into WhatsApp, email or someone’s memory, the relevant history stays inside the matter. 7/ Activity timeline Who changed what. Who uploaded what. What happened with the client. What stage changed. When the next action was created. A complete operational history of every case. 8/ Search One search across: • clients • cases • documents • contacts • notes • tasks Internal software becomes significantly more valuable when information becomes easy to retrieve. 9/ Management overview At firm level: • active cases • cases by stage • workload by lawyer • overdue tasks • upcoming deadlines • recent activity • bottlenecks Not reporting for the sake of reporting. Operational visibility. 10/ And eventually, AI. Not as a chatbot bolted onto the side. AI that understands the context of the firm and can help retrieve information, summarise matters, prepare documents and identify what requires attention. That’s where internal software starts becoming genuinely interesting.
