@MaxNordau Programmers put numbers in letters and names all the time. You wouldn't get very far in software development without it. Even if you don't code, you can use algebra to generalize relationships between numbers, for example getting the area of a circle from the radius.

@comengsc When DVD burners were still very expensive, you could use a CD burner to make a VideoCD. Some DVD players of the time could play VideoCDs. VideoCD has similar quality to a 240p video on YouTube.

@brockpierson I've come across plenty of 100mb and 250mb zip disks that even in 2026 are still 100% readable even if they were someone's old software collection from 1996 or so. The ZIP drives still work, including the USB versions.

@brockpierson In the mid 1990s the average hard drive was 500MB to 1GB. Most people used 1.44MB floppies. CD burners weren't a thing for most people and were very expensive. An affordable 100MB floppy cartridge was incredible at that time.

I believe I wrote a reasonable AI policy for DOSBox-X that might be a good template: AI generated code is not allowed, but you are allowed to use AI to assist you. As long as *you* wrote the code, it's fine.

There are websites out there with older versions of Linux (even back to the late 1990s!) from which you can rebuild old Linux for older hardware.

Using GCC 9.3 and a recent binutils, it seems you can compile working kernels all the way down to about Linux kernel 3.7 before things start to go wrong, which is perfect, because that was the last version to support the 386.

To anyone who is upset the Linux kernel is removing old code, I want to point out that it's open source. This isn't Windows XP where you're left to hack around and patch binaries. You can take the code, fork it, and maintain a kernel for old hardware. So do it.

@Loren_gamer @ADoseofBuckley Really? When I last cared about cable TV 2005-2006 it seemed like they showed everything and anything but music videos. Even MTV-2 that started out as "hey we play music videos and we even play obscure stuff too" didn't seem to play much by that point.

@LundukeJournal They can't stop anyone from using older versions of Linux and they can't stop anyone from forking older kernels to maintain the old hardware support separately from the main Linux kernel. It's open source, take advantage of that and do whatever changes you want.
