Tomorrow, Miles and I are travelling to King’s College Hospital to meet some of the team working in Charlotte’s Lab. We will be able to see first-hand how your donations are being used to support research into brain tumours. It has now been just over10 years since Charlotte passed and not a day passes when I don't think of the daughter I lost to this underfunded cancer. In that time, very little has changed in treatment. The standard NHS chemotherapy  Temozolomide  was licensed in 1999. The six-week course of radiotherapy also remains unchanged. But one thing has changed: Charlotte’s BAG has raised over £378k directly funding research at Charlotte’s Lab, King’s College Hospital, London. The difference with our charity is simple: we self-fund everything. No salaries No overheads No advertising No merchandise We even cover PayPal and PO Box fees personally, so nothing is taken from the charity account. ‘Canadian police have identified the suspect as an 18-year old woman with a history of mental health problems’ This is a very serious lie about a shattering event. It’s not a point-scoring exercise to say so: it’s not stigmatising to notice and explain the lie. Journalist convention is to explain the bones of the story in the first four paragraphs. This developed from the understanding that people don’t always read down: they may click, but they don’t scroll. Engagement tapers. Not only that, at this point, the facts that the killer was a man (contra earlier reports) who ‘identified’ as trans (previously dismissed as speculation) are the newest lines, a fresh top. The @guardian defies all natural editorial instincts to bury in the tenth paragraph the newest line and the explanation that its first sentence is untrue. It will know by its own data that a percentage of readers will just bounce off after reading the lie, and increasing numbers drop off by a third or half of the way down. Certainly before reaching the truth. Which turns out to be not so sacred after all. The madness of this slavish, unquestioning devotion to the lie is puzzling and very worrying. There’s a defiance with which the paper sacrifices itself to the service of identity affirmation. Telling these devoted outlets that they’re wrong has a cantilever effect. It just bolsters their self-righteousness. But choosing to comply with the false claims of a child killer, and assuming virtue in doing so, should never not shock us. Is there nothing that will jolt these editors out of such servility? We saw it too with the Canadian police: the complacency with which the spokesman pronoun corrected a reporter who used accurate language. Sky News and Reuter have also been perpetuating the unqualified lie overnight, hours after being proved wrong. It seems that while there are enough people with money who want them to do it, that’s all that counts. Not principle, or the instincts that led them into the profession. Enough people to pay them to prioritise a murderer over his child victims. Reason, and appeals to professionalism and conscience, are likely misplaced. A man killed children, and if you’re ready to doff your cap and obey his demands, what difference does it make when someone points out that a long time ago you promised to tell the truth. @ellielexx My nephew passed aged two recently. The only positive in an absolutely awful situation was he was too young to understand and this was never a question we had to face. My heart goes out to you both.

Charlotte’s Brain Tumour Journey 18.2.1997 – 24.2.2016 Diagnosis to death: 951 days My mum and brother work tirelessly to put brain cancer on the map. I am no longer here. I died aged 19 years and 5 days, having spent my 19th birthday in a coma in 2016. That may sound a long time ago, but to my family it will always feel like yesterday. When I was told I had a brain tumour, it felt like I had won first prize in the worst lottery imaginable. I loved life and there was so much I wanted to do. I was diagnosed in 2013, at the age of 16. My world fell apart. I was meant to start college that September - instead, I began chemotherapy and radiotherapy. From diagnosis to death, I lived for 31 months. We kept a diary throughout my cancer journey. Sometimes I was able to live a little, so not every day is recorded. My mum now shares our words on X to raise awareness of one of the most underfunded cancers. My treatment was the standard NHS chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Treatment abroad is incredibly expensive and out of reach for most families. Standard treatment remains the reality for the majority of brain tumour patients. There has been no advancement beyond the chemotherapy, Temozolomide, since it was first licensed in 1999. My mum and brother both work full-time while also running the charity started in my name. I was Charlotte. I was born in Brighton on 18th February 1997. I loved handbags and fashion. I was looking forward to a career I was looking forward to getting married, having children, and one day enjoying a long, happy retirement. But none of that ever happened, That’s why I write in the past tense  because I left this Earth when I was 19 years and 5 days old, on 24.2.2016. I had a grade 4, inoperable glioblastoma on my brain stem. I had the standard NHS treatment for six weeks of radiotherapy to my brain and spine, alongside chemotherapy. Why my spine? Because it had already spread. There are treatments abroad, but at a cost so high that for most families, it’s simply out of reach. Since the day I passed, my mother & brother have been fighting for me  to raise awareness of brain tumours, especially glioblastoma, the one that took my life. She tweets nearly every day about my journey. She even set up a charity in my name so others might have a chance I never got. 10 years ago today 28.9.2015 Charlotte’s Brain Tumour Journey 18.2.1997 – 24.2.2016 Diagnosis to death: 951 days I was awake early this morning  and so was Charlotte, with a massive headache. She took two paracetamol and went back to sleep, feeling a little better by 9.00 am. She’s stressed and scared. One of the local nurses also rang King’s to report that Charlotte’s headaches are becoming more frequent. By the afternoon, Charlotte admitted these weren’t the kind of headaches that ease with paracetamol. We travelled to The Marsden for 1.50 pm to see her consultant. It helped to sit with him and talk things through, but the news was hard: her symptoms are due to tumour growth. Charlotte has been put back on 4 mg dexamethasone daily to reduce inflammation. This has upset her deeply; she knows the weight gain will be imminent, and that’s hard for her to bear. Little did we know, this was only the beginning. Glioblastoma had so much more to take from Charlotte. A relentless disease that robs so many, yet receives so little funding. Together, we can change that. Please RT with thanks charlottesbag.com

But one thing has changed: Charlotte’s BAG has raised £335,000  directly funding research at Charlotte’s Lab, King’s College Hospital, London where they are: “Advancing the development and validation of rapid DNA sequencing and real-time data analysis using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT). In collaboration with ONT and colleagues at the University of Nottingham, we have made substantial progress in the first phase of our validation programme. This initiative aims to replace our current methods of methylation classification and MGMT promoter testing with a faster, more efficient workflow.
