@TracketPacer You could totally claim "embedded systems networking engineer in the aerospace industry". Or just "rockit network engineer" I guess. That does sound more fun. It's funny how little people know about the embedded versions of otherwise normal stuff.

@whitequark @wren6991 @timonsku Yeah, in 10 years of audio-related and time-sync related embedded code I programmed a lot of PLLs and forgot how weird this sort of thing looked at first.

@mycoliza @bitshiftmask DMA controllers can get pretty fancy. I used one in an FPGA system that had an ALU to help you calculate field values in headers, and multiplies took several cycles so you effectively had several delay slots after. Never thought of DMA the same again.

@mstk @TaliaRinger For reference, the actual quote from MacLane is "All told, a monad in X is just a monoid in the category of endofunctors of X, with product × replaced by composition of endofunctors and unit set by the identity endofunctor." It's at the end of a section explaining that structure.

@miehrmantraut @paul_snively @TaliaRinger I don't see it as a joke about monads so much as it is about Haskell monad explainers. "The problem" is obviously the typical lack of background necessary to understand the definition.

@dragosr @parsley72 @rmhrisk I totally agree that the situation is terrible and needs fixing badly, but my point is you need to aim your ire a little further back in the software supply chain; the people doing the embedded application code often really *do* have their hands tied.

@dragosr @parsley72 @rmhrisk Anyway, I am now on the other side of the table writing Linux EDR software and shaking my fist at customers who won't upgrade or retire their stupid SLES11 machines. They probably have some dumb reason they are backed into a corner now too.

@dragosr @parsley72 @rmhrisk I am firmly in the camp of "embedded Linux was a massive mistake" at least when you rely on a vendor for providing working drivers rather than complete hw docs and/or fully-upstreamed drivers.

@dragosr @parsley72 @rmhrisk I am not making excuses, just noting exactly how screwed these product teams are. They often *can not* just upgrade. The only real options are to track and backport bugfixes like what Red Hat does for their extended support systems, or somehow pay the vendor to port their stuff.

@kellabyte I used to be surprised sometimes by where certain people came down on "the best way" to debug. Now I figure it comes down to where they got their experience and what they're comfortable with. No one should scoff at powerful tools, though, even if they don't feel they need them.
